Cub Pack 383 Update
Jim Rybarczyk stepped up to be the Cubmaster of Pack 383 when no one else was ready for the
challenge. Jim volunteering for this position is a great credit to our organization and to the scouting
community. Jim and I started our journey together when our sons joined as Tiger Scouts. Even though
we ended up having different den assignments, our dens have always assisted one another throughout
the years at special events and at den meetings. As a result of our recent Blue and Gold ceremony, our
sons have proudly advanced to Webelos II.
Jim and I both have Scouting backgrounds and wanted to impress upon our boys the importance
Scouting can be in their lives. From this adventure we have shared with our sons, I consider Jim a friend
(among many others) and I know we will continue our friendship after our boys advance to Boy Scouts -
if they choose to do so. From the very beginning, Jim and I made a commitment when we started our
leadership roles - to attempt to have all pack meetings and events be fun and eventful for the Scouts.
We have had successes and we may have fallen short of expectations at times, but we have always
given it our best effort with nothing but the best of intentions.
As our Pack's Chartered Organization Representative (COR), being duly assigned by the American
Legion Post 111's Post Commander Gerry Junkas, one of my responsibilities is to assist our pack's
volunteer leadership. It's been difficult at time to wear two hats since I'm also an active leader in our
pack. However, as our pack's COR, I want to insure everyone (as Jim has previously addressed in his
emails) that one of Jim's many roles as a Cubmaster is establishing and maintaining good relationships
with Boy Scout Troops. To clarify - all Boy Scout Troops. Jim and I are in agreement: We both have
Troops that we consider candidates for our sons if they wish to continue their BSA adventure. However,
we will not be steering any of our Scouts into a specific Troop. We will let the Troop leadership do that.
Troop 383 was established as a result of allowing our boys another choice to continue their adventure in
the BSA. Without getting into details, many of us have served under Gerry & Margie's leadership while
they were with our pack. We know their commitment to this Pack. To Gerry's credit, he established
Troop 383 in our pack's honor and has always been committed to seeing our Scouts advance into the
BSA. Establishing Troop 383 was a tremendous accomplishment! As a result, Troop 383 is committed
to helping our Scouts continue their adventure in the BSA. Please don't be mistaken - this is not a
personal endorsement - just a simple fact. If other Troops invite our Webelos to participate in events,
no matter which Troop is represented, it's up the the Scout and his parent(s) to make the final decision.
Our pack's leadership is responsible for one primary goal: To develop and educate our Scouts for
advancement and hopefully one day becoming a Boy Scout into the Troop of their choosing.
Regarding the recent Blue and Gold ceremony - to the best of my memory and understanding: Troop
318 in the past fulfilled the commitment of the Cross-Over event. Additionally, conditions and rules were
established by Troop 318's previous involvement which prevented any other Troop from participating or
being part of the ceremony. When a vote was conducted by our pack leadership, Troop 383 was
selected to conduct the ceremony this year. Troop 318 leadership was not invited to participate, but we
obviously couldn't disappoint Scouts crossing over into 318 from having family representation.
Everyone must understand that Jim and I would never prevent Troop 318 leadership from securing
tickets to be spectators for any of our Scouts selecting Troop 318 as their Boy Scout Troop. However,
as rules have been previously established and practiced in past ceremonies, Troop 383 was selected to
conduct and perform the cross-over ceremony.
Note: For me personally, I was proud of the Troop 383 boys since I know them all from being prior 383
Scouts. Additionally, they wanted to be part of the ceremony - it was special for them as well since they
knew all of our Scouts.
There has been a lot of confusion of late and I want make a clarification statement as an active leader
within our pack since day one: Based on my personal experiences over the years, any previous Troop
involvement with our Pack has always resulted from Scout's siblings that have advanced into a Troop
(usually Troop 318). I have never witnessed any Troop 318 leaders assist us in any event, with the
exception of the Blue and Gold ceremony as stated above. That relationship has changed since Troop
383's establishment.
In conclusion, I would like to thank all our Pack Leaders for their hard work and dedication which is a
tribute to our organization and to the BSA. Thank you all for what you do for our Pack!
Respectfully,
Ron Ahrendt
Chartered Organization Representative (COR),
Assistant Pack 383 Cubmaster,
Assistant Den 10 Leader
